The Future of Job Applications: Attracting Young Talent

Who am I?

I grew up in the digital age. My main form of communication is via emoji’s or unfiltered snaps on BeReal. I care deeply about mental wellbeing, value self-expression and individuality.

So, who am I?

You guessed it — Gen Z.

In today’s digital world, the younger generation has grown up with technology at their fingertips, constantly creating and sharing content on social media platforms. This has led to a shift in the way they communicate, express themselves and even look for jobs. So, it’s no surprise that the traditional way of applying for jobs, with a resume and a cover letter, is no longer the most effective way to attract this talent.

Personality Wins Jobs, not Resume’s

One way to adapt to this change and attract young talent is by embracing video applications. By allowing candidates to submit a short video as part of their application, companies can get a better understanding of who they are, their personality, and how they communicate. Video applications also allow candidates to showcase their qualifications and skills in a more engaging and dynamic way, rather than just reading about them on a piece of paper.

By meeting the younger generation where they’re at, companies can tap into a rich pool of talented and motivated candidates who are eager to start their career.

Better Recruitment Processes

In addition, video applications can also make the recruitment process more efficient for companies. It can save time and resources by allowing recruiters to quickly and easily review a large number of applications, and identify the most suitable candidates. This means that companies can move on to the next stage of the recruitment process more quickly, and ultimately fill their open positions faster.

Moreover, Video applications are also more inclusive, as it allows job seekers with different backgrounds and abilities to express themselves more freely. It can also help to reduce bias and increase fairness in the recruitment process.

Don’t Replace Your Process, Enhance It

Video applications can be used in addition to receiving resume’s as a way to enhance and support them, not as a replacement.

By incorporating both video and written applications into your hiring process, you get the best of both worlds: soft skills and hard skills.

Rather than conducting multiple screening calls to assess communication style, and diving deep into a candidates social media to see how they present themselves, video applications give you all this when they first apply — saving you days of screening time.

You can then back it up with skills and experience from their resume. Win win 🙌

What to Keep in Mind

To ensure a fair review process, companies should ensure that their video review process is fair, consistent, and inclusive across all applicants. You can keep consistency by having candidate’s all answer the same question, or by having a maximum time limit set.

In conclusion, video applications are a great way to attract young talent to entry-level jobs. It allows candidates to express themselves in a format they’re comfortable with and make the recruitment process more efficient and inclusive for companies. By meeting the younger generation where they’re at, companies can tap into a rich pool of talented and motivated candidates who are eager to start their career.
