So much pressure is placed on your job application. Does it show my strengths? Is it formatted correctly? Have I provided enough detail?! 🤯
The application process can be stressful. If you’re a perfectionist, you might feel like your application is never ready to be sent off.
Take a sigh of relief with our top tips to ease you across the finish line:
- Refresh & reset: Seriously, close your laptop. Go for a walk. Hit up some friends. Give yourself enough time to recoup and then look at your resume when you feel refreshed. You might even think of something meaningful to add to it.
- Optimise: Read the job description to make sure you’ve included the relevant keywords in your resume. Some hiring managers use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that filters applications containing key terms that are related to skills and experience.
- Personalise: Don’t have a generic cover letter. Make sure your cover letter is specific to the job and company you’re applying for.
If you’re looking for a unique way to stand out, ditch the cover letter and send a Video Verb instead. You’ll need to download the UseVerb app to do so. (App Store & Google Play)
4. Share: Ask for feedback on your resume/CV. Share it with someone you feel comfortable with and get their comments. Is it structured properly? Does the information show your value? Try to look at any feedback you receive as positive, as it helps you to improve your application.
5. Review: Make sure you proofread your application. Typo’s, incorrect company names, broken links… can easily be missed. Triple-check these! Better yet, send to someone to do a final proofread for you.
6. Submit: Submit your application and relax while you wait for the outcome. Don’t be alarmed if you don’t hear back immediately. The recruitment process can take some time, so be patient and respectful of employers time. We recommend following up 5–7 business days after you’ve sent your application.
There’s always going to be something more to add, or something we should have changed. At the end of the day, you’ve done your best and just need to get your application out there — you’ve got to be in it to win it 💪
You got this, good luck!
